Admission Criteria at Undergraduate Level

There is no dearth  for aspirants who want to start early They can take their pick from B.Sc in Fashion Design, B.A. (Honours) and Diploma.

Eligibility Criteria

Any 10+2 certificate holder, not more than 23 years of age and who has at least 50%marks in aggregate is eligible for UG courses.

Admission Process

The admission process varies from institution to institution. While some colleges and universities consider the scores of students in Common Entrance Tests as the only prerequisite, other institutes conduct their own written tests, group discussions and interviews.

Examination

Common Entrance Test:

A number of national and state level common entrance tests serve as the initial screening stage, wherein aspirants are supposed to prove their mettle and secure marks that could eventually help them grab their seats at institutes of their choice.

NIFT Entrance Exam:  Conducted by National Institute of Fashion Technology, the NIFT Entrance Exam test invites applications from aspirants who intend to pursue B. Des and B. F. Tech. Apart from these bachelor degree courses, the scores in this exam are accepted for admission into PG level courses as well. Further subdivided into Creative Ability Test, General Ability Test and Situation Test, this particular test delves deeper into the knowledge level and attitude of aspirants.

AIEED (All India Entrance Examination for Design)Conducted by ARCH Academy of Design, the AIEED test focuses on testing the creativity, design and aesthetic sense of aspirants. Interested candidates can apply for any of their preferred test modes – Offline and Online. This particular test has two rounds: Creative Ability Test and General Ability Test.

College Specific Exam Tests

Design Aptitude Test (DAT): GD Goenka School of Fashion & Design conducts Design Aptitude Test (DAT) every year. Following NIFT and NID test pattern, this particular exam tests both intellectual and practical skills of aspirants.

Pearl Academy of Fashion Entrance Exam: Pearl Academy of Fashion conducts PAF test for admission to its 4-year degree courses in  Design,  Retail & Merchandising,  Merchandising & Production, Jewellery Design, Textile Design and Communication Design.

Group Discussion & Personal Interview: Almost all of these entrance tests have Group Discussion and Personal Interview as the next challenges for designer course aspirants.

Admission Criteria at Postgraduate Level

Career and learning opportunities widen further for aspirants who join postgraduate courses in. A range of Masters level courses provides them with ample options to explore, some of which include Masters in Fashion Design, M.Sc. and Post Graduate Diploma.

Eligibility Criteria

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelors of Science or any other equivalent degree with at least 50%marks is the minimum educational qualification for postgraduate fashion designing courses.

Admission Process

Almost all reputed colleges and universities conduct entrance examination to ensure that aspirants with a right sense of fashion and design could make it to the final list of selected candidates for different courses.

Examination

Common Entrance Test:

Aspirants who want to pursue postgraduate level courses need to clear NIFT Entrance Exam and AIEED. Another entrance exam for postgraduate courses is Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).

 

CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) – Conducted by IIT Bombay, CEED is an all-India qualifying examination for admission to M. Des. programmes at IIT BombayIIT GuwahatiIIT DelhiIISc BangaloreIIT Kanpur and IIT Hyderabad. This test includes several MCQs on Numerical Ability and General Awareness, along with subjective type question on Memory Drawing, Sketching of Ideas, Writing Skills and Designing.

Group Discussion and Personal Interview

Based on the minimum cut-off limit decided by particular colleges and universities, only a few aspirants are invited for the GD and PI round.

At Undergraduate Level

Undergraduate level  courses, such as B.Sc , B.A. (Honours) and Diploma, further branch out into many specialisations, some of which include Fashion Design, Accessory Design, Textile Design, Fashion Communication and Apparel Production.

Fashion Design:

Aiming to provide a balanced mix of Indian fashion and global style aesthetics, B.Des  course addresses the dynamic needs of the export market; thereby, creating designers who could anticipate, address and resolve design specific issues and concerns.

Syllabus: This particular specialisation trains students to ideate, conceive designs, learn the art of drapery and create apparels that could please the senses and sensibilities of modern fashion lovers. The subjects taught to B.Des students include Fashion Studies, Illustration and Design, History of Costumes, Surface Development Techniques, Garment Construction and Design Collection.

Job Prospects: Some job profiles worth considering include Costume Designer, Illustrator, Freelance Design Consultants, Fashion Trends Forum Organisers and Stylists.

Accessory Design:

Accessory Design covers various niche segments, apart from designing and production of lifestyle products and accessories. The B.Des Accessory Design programme accordingly prepares students so that they could design costume jewellery, footwear, leather goods, giftware, visual merchandise and other lifestyle products.

Syllabus: With its focus on providing expertise in material selection, design methodology and production process of lifestyle products and fashion accessories, B. Des Accessory Design has Anthropometrics, Construction Principles and  Studies as its core subjects.

Job Prospects: Students can become Brand Managers, Designers, Visual Merchandisers and Entrepreneurs.

Textile Design:

Aspirants who opt for Textile Design as their specialisation are sure to get in-depth knowledge and first-hand experience of design and development of raw material, textiles and design applications.

Syllabus: Major subjects that form the core of Textile Design syllabus include Textile Technology, Technical Marketing, Printing & Finishing, CAD & Weave Design, and Quality Analysis & Assurance.

Job Prospects: Some professional positions available are Design Managers, Fabric Managers and Freelance Designers.

Fashion Communication:

A comparably newer avenue, Fashion Communication focuses on brand identity, retail scenario, advertising and visual merchandising.

Syllabus : The core syllabus include Fashion Journalism, Graphic Design, Exhibition & Display Design, Photography, Visual Merchandising and Advertising & Public Relations.

Job Prospects: Aspirants can occupy the positions of Fashion Journalists, Brand Managers, Visual Merchandising Experts, Consumer Behaviour Analysts, and so on.

Fashion Desinging at Postgraduate Level

Aspirants of postgraduate degree and diploma courses do need to zero in on a specialisation that best complements their creative faculties and hence, allows them to excel in their chosen field.

MA in Fashion Retail:

Highly beneficial for developing marketing and managerial skills, the MA degree course in Retail has fashion marketing, merchandising and retailing as its core components.

 

Syllabus: Students learn Retail Management, Principles of Marketing, Elements of Design & History of Fashion, Foreign Languages, Quality Control & Production Management, Visual Merchandising, Managerial Accounting, Retail Logistics and Customer Relationship Management.

 

Job Prospects: Graduates can become  Fashion Coordinator, Fashion Show Organizer, Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Fabric Quality Control Manager, Showroom Sales Representative and Technical Designer.

MBA (Fashion Design Management):

MBA course attracts the attention of several  individuals who wish to establish their own business, pursue higher degree programs or become teachers or lecturers in colleges.

 

Syllabus: The syllabus of MBA includes Business Communication, Indian Fashion Scenario, Global Scenario, Fundamentals of Fashion Products & Manufacturing, E-Business & E-Commerce, Fashion Strategies, Visual Merchandising and International  Marketing.

 

Job Prospects: Students can become Costume Designers, Apparel Production Managers, Outside Sales Representatives, Production Pattern Makers.

MF Tech.:

Master  course covers all major aspects of designing and technical machine work.

 

Syllabus: Subjects that MF Tech. students need to study include Advanced Pattern Making, Computer Designing, Knitwear Design Technology, Design Illustration, Textile Design Development and Computer Aided Designing.

 

Job Prospects: Job opportunities include  Retail Manager, CAD Pattern Cutter, Design Technologist, Brand Managers,  Tech Officer and Freelance Designer.
